Main motivation for taking adaptation action
Seeing as Aachen is situated in a valley and is experiencing an increasing number of heat-related and air quality issues, air circulation is becoming more important. These issues are even more relevant considering the expanding elderly population and their special health concerns. Furthermore, heavy rains and flooding of small streams and the sewer system are occurring with increased frequency. All of these climate-related changes, make it imperative for Aachen to take strategic adaptation action.

Summary of the strategy/plan
Although Aachen has already implemented some adaptation measures, it adopted an adaptation concept in 2014 as a strategic basis for further action. The impetus for the concept was the development of a new land use plan. The Concept describes Aachen's current situation, climate change-related parameters, and an analysis of climate and air quality. It also includes a sensitivity analysis, an outline of the city's adaptation needs, and actions to address the identified needs.
Planned adaptation actions
Adaptation measures Aachen has already taken or plans to take include, for example, creating more green areas in the city center, planting trees, implementing flood protection measures along the streams, and protecting fresh air paths and cold air production areas. In addition, Aachen has defined flood, green, and ventilation areas in its land use plan.

Climate and Air Quality Model
What sectors are concerned
Part of the preparations for the adaptation concept was a forecast of the city's air quality. The plan shows the prognosis for thermal und pollution-related stress in 2030. The resulting adaptation action was the definition of ‘protection areas' in the new land use plan that will be finalised by the end of 2017. Using this information, zoning plan regulations and building permissions will follow the rules of climate-friendly planning.
