Secondary channel to the river Agueda
What sectors are concerned
The urban area of Águeda, crossed by the river with the same name, is one of the largest areas affected by floods in Portugal. Águeda is prone to flooding thanks to the steep slopes of Serra do Caramulo (formed by granite and schist) where the Águeda River begins, but also the large alluvial areas that form an essentially waterproofed basin. Due to the city's exposure to frequent flooding risk and to mitigate the effects of flooding, Águeda decided to construct a secondary channel of the Agueda River and make some changes to the flow path of two bridges. These are just a couple examples of the measures taken throughout the course of the river to address flooding.
