Main motivation for taking adaptation action
Since Munich is affected by rain events in the Alps, one of the city's motivations for taking action is to be better prepared to deal with climate change challenges such as heavy rainfalls and flooding. Munich also strives to confront extreme temperatures, accomodate its increasing population, and maintain a favourable urban climate with high liveability.
Have you already developed an adaptation strategy?
Yes, we have an adaptation strategy

Summary of the strategy/plan
The Implementation Strategy for Adaptation in the City of Munich, which expands on Munich's Strategic Guidelines on Climate Change, is being developed in close cooperation with all relevant departments within the city administration. It will compile existing and future adaptation measures and build on data from the city's urban climate map as well as climate projections from the German Meteorological Service.
Planned adaptation actions
Actions that have been taken include the Isar Plan (described below). Additional actions have been also been implemented where adaptation to a changing climate has been considered.
Good practice / spotlight item
The Isar Plan is a flood risk management plan that involves the restoration of the formerly canalized Isar River (8 km within the City of Munich) in an effort to prepare for changing rain patterns. This project involved planning and developing the environment, as well as water management and construction. The plan ultimately facilitated better flood protection, an improved habitat for wild flora and fauna, and improved recreational spaces for the citizens of Munich. More information about the Isar Plan can be found in a case study on Climate-ADAPT.
