Reggio Emilia -
Main motivation for taking adaptation action
Reggio Emilia is now participating in the ICT-PSP project "GeoSmartCity" whose objective is to create, from geographic data (public and private), integrated and harmonized according to European standard (Inspire), a web platform that can offer smart and innovative services in relation to the theme of the Green Energy. As a matter of fact, Reggio Emilia realized few years ago a GeoData Warehouse & Business Intelligence system, which aims to meet the information and knowledge needs of the organization. This tool, through the collection and interaction of geo referenced data from different sources, helps the creation of the Municipality policies and their subsequent monitoring.

Planned adaptation actions
Since 2001, the Reggio Emilia Municipality is a partner in the European project Life-Environment CLEAR, for the development of the environmental accountability system; moreover, since 2004 the Municipality is involved in the development of an environmental accountability system in order to facilitate the administrative processes to draft and approve two Environmental Budgets per year - indeed, since 2000, the collection of environmental data is organized in a database.
Other different actions in the energy area: adoption of the Municipal Energetic Plan (2008); adoption of a local protocol in order to define the building energetic certification system (ECOABITA); control of its energy waste especially addressing: the public lighting, renovation of municipal buildings; since 2006 the Municipality has issued new call for tenders for Heat Management (with ESCO logic) with energy conservation criteria; sign of Covenant of Mayors in 2009 and approval of related Sustainable Energy Action Plan by European Commission in 2012.
Reggio Emilia was the coordinating beneficiary of the Life+ Project "LAKS" (2009-2011): the project goal was to support public administration in the definition and enhancement of the accountability system which considers local CO2 emissions. Reggio Emilia was also associated beneficiary of the Life+ Project "RELS" (2010-2013), with the aims to contribute, in an innovative way, to the implementation of European priorities concerning recycling and Energy production from renewable sources. Reggio Emilia is now participating in the ICT-PSP project "GeoSmartCity" whose objective is to create, from geographic data (public and private), integrated and harmonized according to European standard (Inspire), a web platform that can offer smart and innovative services in relation to the theme of the Green Energy.

The Green Belt and the Suburban Landscape
The Green Belt of the city, formed by river parks (Crostolo, Rhone, Modolena) and green wedges is the main strategy for increasing social and ecological quality of suburban areas. The Green Belt aims to create a series of green and agricultural areas that surround the city and in which visitors can find paths for walking and biking as well as information about the area. Through this project the city has not only provided recreational and relaxation opportunities for its residents but it has also helped nuture biodiversity and cool the area, providing visitors with relief from the heat.
