Responding to flood risks
In response to several flooding incidents in recent years, Vicenza has taken concrete adaptation action by improving collaboration with civil protection (i.e. fire, police, hospitals) and other local agencies. The city has also built, reinforced, and raised the banks of detention basins to reduce the peak flow and volume of floodwater by providing temporary floodwater storage. In addition, a number of other actions have been proposed, including raising awareness of flood risks, preparing the most at-risk public housing for flooding, carrying out flood risk assessments, integrating climate change considerations into planning and policy documents, and working with communities to improve their resilience to other anticipated climate impacts.
