Main motivation for taking adaptation action
Wuppertal's main motivation for taking adaptation action is to avoid damage to
infrastructure and buildings by floods, storms and overheating. Wuppertal also seeks to ensure a healthy environment within the city and improve planning and decision making processes regarding adaptation. Lastly, Wuppertal strives to capitalise on the synergies between climate protection and adaptation.

Summary of the strategy/plan
Steep slopes and roads make the Wuppertal area particularly vulnerable to extreme weather such as heavy rainfall and powerful flash floods. To confront these climate-related threats, the city of Wuppertal developed an adaptation plan, which contains a number of interrelated measures and was the result of various research projects. Some of these measures include conducting flood inspections, improving the city drainage system by 2026, awareness raising amongst owners of buildings in high-risks areas, and providing technical water management support.
Planned adaptation actions
In addition to water management, Wuppertal will continue to plant drought and storm resistant trees; monitor invasive species; introduce new standards for the renovation of public buildings, green roof, facades, and courtyards; introduce new measures for heat management; and cooperate with other regional authorities on adaptation-related initiatives.

Vehicles for disaster management: reaching citizens in need
What sectors are concerned
As a result of changing climatic conditions such as increasing storms, frequent flood events, and harsh winters the fire department and other emergency services of Wuppertal have experienced difficulties reaching disaster locations. Therefore, the fire department decided in 2011 to upgrade older vehicles to make them better suited for extreme conditions. Now Wuppertal has two additional trucks outfitted with all-wheel drive, a generator, chainsaws, and powerful submersible pumps, among other things. With enhanced capabilities, the fire department is better equipped to overcome extreme environmental conditions. More information can be found here
