Good practice / spotlight item
Creating blue and green corridors
What sectors are concerned
To increase the city's adaptation capacity, Zwijndrecht intends to open old waterways to act as rainwater canals, reorganise the sewer system thanks to new building sites, and incorporate biodiversity into the curriculum for school children. Green roofs, green and blue corridors, and green borders with insect-friendly plants will also be installed to provide a cooler, more biodiversity-friendly environment. An example of one such project can be found in the picture to the right. A small water reserve with elements that are conducive to the local flora and fauna was built along a path for cyclists and pedestrians, which connects the main shopping street and a school.
With educational plaques, the reserve serves as a place where children can learn by experiencing nature.
