Atmosphere

The atmosphere plays a central role in the world's climate system. Information on datasets of climate variables, notably temperature and precipitation, is available from various websites, some of which provide access to the underlying databases.

Globally, the World Meteorological Organization's (WMO's) Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) aims to be a long-term, user-driven, operational system capable of providing comprehensive observations required for monitoring the climate system. Temperature records are processed, analysed and made available by organisations in the USA (NASA/GISS, NOAA/NCDC) and the United Kingdom (UEA/CRU). Climate scenarios or projections are produced by a large number of climate research institutions, primarily in the United States, Japan and Europe. In Europe, the climate modelling groups are organised into the European Network for Earth System Modelling (ENES). The FP project ENSEMBLES addresses a broad range of climate experiments, while the global CORDEX programme focuses on regional downscaling. The WMO periodically issues Statements on the Status of the Global Climate.
