Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations

Description:

Food and agriculture organisation of United Nations The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations leads international efforts to defeat hunger. Serving both developed and developing countries, FAO acts as a neutral forum where all nations meet as equals to negotiate agreements and debate policy. FAO is also a source of knowledge and information. FAO helps developing countries and countries in transition modernize and improve agriculture, forestry and fisheries practices and ensure good nutrition for all. Since our founding in 1945, we have focused special attention on developing rural areas, home to 70 percent of the world's poor and hungry people. In Europe, FAO activities include capacity building in the Balkan countries and other eastern European countries which are not members of the EU.

The FAO Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia is implementing a Technical Cooperation Programme on mapping of and policy orientation for adaptation to climate change in selected countries of CEE and CA sub-regions. The project has as its objectives to (i) compile an inventory of available studies, adaptation measures and policies related to the reduction of impacts of climate change in the field of agriculture, forestry and water management in selected countries of the Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and Central Asia (CA) subregions, (ii) review known climate change impact projections, national policy scenarios and outlook studies and their regional implications with a focus on adaptation and mitigation measures in agriculture and then, to the extent possible, (iii) develop recommendations on best practices for adaptation and policy measures at the national and regional levels (including international cooperation at trans-boundary and sub-regional levels) as well as (iv) proposals for technical assistance to the member countries in the Europe and Central Asia region for future research and adaptation responses both at national and regional levels.

FAO-Adapt is an organization-wide framework programme that provides general guidance and introduces principles as well as priority themes, actions and implementation support to FAO’s activities for climate change adaptation.
