European Commission consults on new EU framework for forest monitoring and strategic plans
On 25 August 2022, the EC launched an online public consultation on the upcoming legislative proposal for a new EU framework for forest monitoring and strategic plans. The aim is to develop an EU-wide forest observation framework to provide open access to detailed and accurate information on the condition and management of the European forests, including the support of adaptation of forests to climate change. All stakeholders are invited to share their views on this initiative via an online consultation that runs until 17 November 2022.

European Commission proposes new strategy to protect and restore EU forests
With the adoption of the New EU Forest Strategy for 2030, a flagship initiative of the European Green Deal that builds on the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, the EU is proposing a new strategy that contributes to the ‘Fitfor55’ package of measures proposed to achieve greenhouse gas emission reductions. Forests are a natural ally in adapting to and fighting against climate change and biodiversity loss, and will play a vital role in making Europe the first climate neutral continent by 2050.

Expert meeting held on Remote Sensing-based bark beetle outbreak detection and mapping
In Europe, recent bark beetle outbreaks have garnered much attention as they have affected large swathes of spruce forests, particularly in central and Eastern Europe. Remote sensing is instrumental in revealing and understanding global change and much progress has been made in using it to monitor bark beetle outbreaks. On 22 November 2022, an online JRC Expert Meeting reviewed the state-of-the-art and challenges in using remote sensing to detect and map bark beetle outbreaks in Europe. It was attended by more than 40 scientists and representatives of three European Commission DGs.

Wildfires in the EU: 2022 was the second-worst year, a warning from a changing climate
In 2022, land area roughly the size of Corsica was scorched by wildfires in the EU, according to the latest JRC report on fires in the pan-European region. Nearly 900,000 ha of land burnt in 2022, of which approximately 365,000 ha belong to Natura 2000 sites, according to the recently published report 'Forest Fires in Europe, Middle East and North Africa 2022'.
