New Budapest Declaration commits European countries to develop ‘Health National Adaptation Plans’
Adopted on 7 July 2023 by the countries of the WHO European Region, the Budapest Declaration formulates political commitments and actions to address the health risks posed by the triple crisis of climate change, pollution and biodiversity loss. It could become a real game-changer for the health sector’s engagement with climate change, and for the climate policy contribution to health. With regard to adaptation policy, a key commitment is the development, updating and implementation of ‘Health National Adaptation Plans’, either as standalone documents, or as a part of wider National Adaptation Plans.

Stockholm Statement: national public health institutes' role in preparedness and response to climate crisis
National Public Health Institutes (NPHIs) from around the world met in Stockholm, Sweden early December to address and find solutions to the biggest challenges to the public health security. In the Stockholm statement they highlight the urgent need to apply the lessons learned from COVID-19 to address other health threats, including explicitly climate change. NPHIs have a vital role in handling the crises that affect human health.

New indicators available in the Observatory
The European Climate and Health Observatory now offers more indicators related to health impacts of climate-sensitive infectious diseases, heat and pollen (developed by the Lancet Countdown Europe) and has updated existing indicators with recent data.

The new EEA report ‘Climate change as a threat to health and well-being in Europe: focus on heat and infectious diseases’ providing evidence and outlooks on the health threats caused by heatwaves and climate-sensitive diseases is published.
New climate change country profiles show key health risks and priority areas for action in European Region
The World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) have launched the Health and Climate Change Country Profiles to give an overview of critical areas for action to combat these threats, and to provide links to available resources. Developed in collaboration with national health services, they summarize evidence of the climate hazards and health risks facing countries.

Adoption of Budapest Declaration leveraging action on health challenges related to climate change
At the 7th Ministerial Conference on Environment and Health, organised by the World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe (WHO/EU) early July 2023, health and environment ministers of countries of the WHO European Region adopted the Budapest Declaration. The declaration prioritizes urgent, wide-ranging action on health challenges related to climate change, environmental pollution and biodiversity loss.

The European Climate and Health Observatory now includes a map viewer visualizing the availability of urban green spaces to vulnerable groups. The viewer allows to explore the availability of urban green to the elderly and to unemployed people as well as around schools and hospitals.

EEA launches new report on climate and health
On 9 November, EEA will launch its new report ‘Climate change as a threat to health and well-being in Europe: focus on heat and infectious diseases’. During the online launch event, EEA and the European Commission will discuss the report’s key findings, solutions to minimise the climate-related health threats, and insights into related EU policy responses. Participants can discuss actions to minimise health threats through more resilient health systems.

2022 Europe report of the Lancet Countdown on health and climate change
Alongside the publication of the 2022 Global Report, the Lancet Countdown in Europe published its health and climate change report with focus on Europe. The report highlights health effects of climate change and the health co-benefits of climate action.
