European Commission invites regions and communities to join the Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change
The Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change’s objective is to support 150 regions and communities to accelerate their transformation towards climate resilience by 2030. A survey is available for regions and communities to express their interest in joining the Mission. Once replies to the survey have been analysed, regions and communities that demonstrate commitment to adaptation, will be invited to sign a Mission Charter.

First German Adaptation Law to enter into force by mid 2024
The new climate adaptation law, adopted in December 2023, defines the strategic framework for future climate adaptation at federal, state and local levels in Germany. This framework is designed to coordinate climate adaptation efforts on all levels and to enable progress across all fields of action. With the law, the German government also commits to pursuing a precautionary climate adaptation strategy with measurable goals in future.

Main results of the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report presented: Climate change widespread, rapid, and intensifying
The IPCC is currently producing its Sixth Assessment Report (AR6), which consists of contributions from the three IPCC Working Groups and a Synthesis Report. The Working Group I contribution was published, and the main results were presented in a press conference on 9 August 2021. This report will be a key contribution to the UNFCCC COP26, which is starting in less than three months.

Call for cities: Apply to receive tailored support to advance on adaptation action
The Policy Support Facility is a new initiative launched by the European Commission under the Covenant of Mayors – Europe, to help local and regional authorities implement adaptation strategies. Forty local and regional authorities from 12 EU Member States have the opportunity to receive tailored support from experts to advance on adaptation action. They are invited to submit an application by 21 June 2022.

Fit for 55 Package turns EU's climate target into climate action
The European Commission has released the “Fit for 55” package, a suite of measures that will underpin the European Union’s efforts to reach its pledge of reducing greenhouse gas emissions 55% from 1990 levels by 2030. Part of the larger EU Green Deal, the package includes policy proposals that define the pathway for the EU's ambition to fulfil its contribution under the Paris Agreement. It includes all elements of the Green Deal including the new EU's Climate Adaptation Strategy. It is the Commission's proposal for the legislative tools to deliver on the targets agreed in the European Climate Law.

New European climate law creates 'duty to adapt'
In June 2021, the Council of the EU adopted the new European climate law. It sets into legislation the objective of a climate-neutral EU by 2050. It also requires EU institutions to ‘ensure continuous progress in enhancing adaptive capacity, strengthening resilience and reducing vulnerability to climate change’, thereby making adaptation a legal requirement for the EU for the first time.
