X-RISK-CC WebGIS

The X-RISK-CC WebGIS is an interactive visualisation and data access tool for climate extremes in the Alpine region. It enables users to explore and analyse current and projected climate extremes indices, such as precipitation extremes, heatwaves, droughts, wind extremes, and compound events at different levels of global warming. The platform combines interactive mapping, regional statistics, time series visualisation, summary reports and downloadable datasets to support climate risk assessment and adaptation planning for policymakers, risk managers, researchers, and practitioners across the Alpine Space.

What you can do with it

Input

  • Select an area within the Alpine Space.
  • Explore current and projected indices for precipitation extremes, heatwaves, drought, wind extremes and compound events.
  • Compare projected changes at different levels of global warming.
  • Examine regional statistics and time series for selected climate-extreme indices.
  • Access summary reports and downloadable datasets.

Output

  • Interactive maps of current and projected climate extremes.
  • Regional statistics and time-series visualisations.
  • Climate-extreme indices and downloadable datasets.
  • Information on compound events.
  • Scientific summary reports for the Alpine Space and selected subregions.

Use it to

  • Identify spatial hotspots for climate extremes across the Alpine region.
  • Compare how extreme-event patterns may change at different warming levels.
  • Examine individual and compound climate extremes.
  • Support initial climate-risk and vulnerability assessments.
  • Inform regional and transnational adaptation discussions.
  • Identify areas where local observations and more detailed assessments are needed.

Why is it relevant to climate adaptation

Provides a harmonised view of climate extremes across the Alpine Space, allowing users to compare areas that cross national and administrative boundaries using a consistent evidence base. Its coverage of compound events is particularly useful where several extremes may interact or occur together. The tool helps users identify regional hotspots and determine where deeper local analysis is needed. Because the datasets are relatively coarse and may underestimate some local extremes, the results should be complemented with observations and tailored climate information for site-specific decisions.

Used in

  • Climate-extreme analysis across the Interreg Alpine Space, covering Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Slovenia and Switzerland.
  • Transnational identification of hotspots for precipitation extremes, heatwaves, drought, wind extremes and compound events.
  • Scientific summaries for the Alpine Space and selected Alpine subregions.
  • Climate-risk assessment and adaptation-planning work developed through the X-RISK-CC project and maintained by Eurac Research.
  • Regional analysis supporting sectors including agriculture, forestry, health, transport, water management and mountain-area planning.
