European Parliament supports local leaders' call for a stronger role of cities and regions in global climate negotiations
25 Oct 2022The European Parliament and the European Committee of the Regions join forces ahead of the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) calling on Member States to raise climate actions. The European Parliament COP27 resolution recognizes the urgent need for multilevel and cooperative action and the involvement of local and regional authorities in the implementation of the Paris agreement, it supports locally-led approaches towards adaptation and biodiversity protection, calls for mandatory adaptation and climate vulnerability tests at local level and stresses the need for better channeling financial resources to the local level.

Experts met in Athens to take action on climate change adaptation and urban resilience
14 Oct 2022Cities and regions across Europe are working hard to foster resilience and adaptation, and are eager to exchange knowledge and experiences related to these efforts. The 9th edition of the European Urban Resilience Forum (EURESFO) took place in Athens, Greece, from 14 to 15 September gathering city representatives, experts, and stakeholders working at the forefront of climate adaptation, urban resilience, and disaster risk management.
EEA launches new report on climate and health
13 Oct 2022On 9 November, EEA will launch its new report ‘Climate change as a threat to health and well-being in Europe: focus on heat and infectious diseases’. During the online launch event, EEA and the European Commission will discuss the report’s key findings, solutions to minimise the climate-related health threats, and insights into related EU policy responses. Participants can discuss actions to minimise health threats through more resilient health systems.

More regions and local authorities join the EU Mission for Adaptation to Climate Change
03 Oct 2022One hundred more regions and local authorities sign the Charter of the EU Mission for Adaptation to Climate Change in support of the goals of the European Green Deal and the EU Climate Adaptation Strategy. The total number of signatories to the Mission Charter now stands at 215 from 24 Member States: declaring their willingness to cooperate, mobilise resources and develop activities to reach their adaptation goals.
2022 European Aviation Environmental Report

It also reports on policies and actions put in place to adapt to climate change and build resilience by integrating climate change considerations into planning processes and future investments in the aviation sector.
European Climate and Health Observatory launched and joint Lancet Countdown-EEA Briefing published
28 Sep 2022The European Climate and Health Observatory is a partnership of the European Commission, the EEA and several other European and international organizations. This Observatory provides access to a wide range of resources on climate change and health, and aims to strengthen the health component in adaptation strategies and activities as well as the climate adaptation component in health policies. The Observatory was launched on 4 March 2021 in a virtual launch event together with its partner organisations and users. In connection with the launch of the Observatory, the Lancet Countdown and the EEA publish a joint briefing ’Responding to the health risks of climate change in Europe’. This Briefing highlights key health impacts from climate change as well as opportunities to reduce climate-related health risks through adaptation policies aligned with mitigation actions.
Designing climate resilient landscapes: State of the art projects in Europe

They cover a range of measures from water retention in the landscape, soil restoration, increasing forest resilience, and restoring ecosystem services.
The citadel in Copenhagen can now cope with a 1,000-year rainfall
23 Sep 2022The Ministry of Environment of Denmark and the Environmental Protection Agency, in collaboration with several other ministries, agencies and organisations have published a new case study on urban climate adaptation in Copenhagen. Seven cast-iron manhole covers on the ground are the only sign of extensive and very complex flood protection for the Citadel in Østerbro, Copenhagen. The fortification is a listed ancient monument. In recent years, the Citadel has been exposed to several torrential flood events following cloudbursts. Following major underground work, the Danish Defence Estates and Infrastructure Organisation has now secured the Citadel against a 1,000-year rainfall event.
