Anadia - Portugal

Main motivation for taking adaptation action

By taking adaptation action Anadia aims to strengthen its capacity to adapt to climate change through the adoption and coordination of cross-sectoral and territorial measures to reduce forest fire occurrences.

Adaptation strategy

Name of the strategy/ plan (If adopted)
Municipal Plan for Forest Fire Prevention

Summary of the strategy/plan
A large portion of the Anadia municipal area consists of forests (with vast stretches of fast-growing hardwoods) and agricultural land, meaning that it is particularly vulnerable to increasingly frequent forest fires. To prepare for this, Anadia developed a Municipal Plan for Forest Fire Prevention. The Plan defines appropriate prevention and response measures and integrates forest fire planning into the activities of various municipal agencies.

Planned adaptation actions

Anadia has scheduled the rehabilitation of existing water-related infrastructure as well as the construction of more dams and dikes for water retention and fire fighting supply. The city is also engaged in fire management by fragmenting the forest into sections, which reduces the area covered by large fires and allows firefighters to confront the fire from multiple angles. Planning, construction, and maintenance of forest roads also enable fire fighting services to be dispatched quickly to both the fire zone and water refilling and refueling points.

Good practice / spotlight item

Reducing Forest Fires
This "Municipal Plan for Forest Fire Prevention" involves the adoption and implementation of measures that deal with the selective clearing of forest areas and the cutting and chipping of bushes. At the same time, the project ensures that trees in all age classes as well as ecologically interesting shrubs are preserved. This project also involves the population through awareness-raising, which takes citizen's behavioural patterns into consideration. This is done in order to allow us to adjust the communication and transmission of messages, so that they conform with the best practices. Ultimately this project aims to prevent and protect the city from natural hazards such as forest fires.
