Desalination plant to deal with water scarcity
Following an extended drought and in an effort to preempt and prepare for water scarcity and droughts in the future, the 200,000m3/day Llobregat desalination plant was built to serve Barcelona. Operational since 2009, the plant provides 20% of Barcelona's drinking water and as a result of its efforts to reduce its environmental impact, Llobregat was recognized as ‘desalination plant of the year' at the 2010 Global Water Awards.
