Good practice / spotlight item

Cleaning up & protecting local forests against fires
Farsala is actively planning and implementing adaptation measures, including, for example, greening the urban environment and public buildings to reduce the urban heat island effect and organising awareness raising events about heat waves. Furthermore, in March 2014, Farsala was chosen as the Greek starting city for ‘Let's do it', a global, environmental clean-up event. Resident turnout was impressive and volunteers of all ages cleaned and planted trees in the town's 'Aesthetic Forest', which belongs to a network of protected areas called Natura. In the summer of 2014, Farsala also continued its forest protection work by removing flammable vegetation, cleaning firebreaks and installing fire extinguishers.
