Summary of the strategy/plan
The goal of this adaptation strategy is to make city decision makers aware of the possible consequences and opportunities that climate change presents. It is not meant to reflect a complete adaptation plan but rather outline the action points and important building blocks of adaptation.

Planned adaptation actions

Key adaptation actions include, for example, creating emergency water ways, reserving areas for flood protection, maintaining areas within the city that have a positive, cooling effect to provide relief from high temperatures, and altering the facades of buildings to create shade.

Good practice / spotlight item

Expansion of the discharge profile of the Ihme River and removal of the foreland
The old bridge formed a bottleneck that slowed down the flood run-offs of the Ihme River and caused flooding, but with the new bridge, the span was increased considerably. On top of this, excavations were made in the river bank area, so that the retaining capacity was increased in the case of high water. In case of a hundred-year flood, the position of the water surface will be up to 0.39 metres lower than before these changes were made.
