Summary of the strategy/plan
An increase in the global temperature is inevitable. Therefore it is wise for cities and communities to arm themselves against the expected effects of climate change. Hasselt has attempted to do just that with its Climate Adaptation Plan. The Plan does not contain an extensive study but rather focuses on a hands-on approach by summing up 40 actions the city of Hasselt can take to adapt to the expected changes in climate.

Planned adaptation actions

Hasselt's main adaptation actions mainly concentrate on enhancing the heat bearing capacity of the city and water retention. This can be achieved by two parallel measures: creating more green spaces and structures and creating more room for water (increasing buffer capacity and water retention possibilities) in the city. In addition Hasselt aims to gain support for its adaptation strategy among citizens and other stakeholders.

Good practice / spotlight item

Weather-related preparation for large outdoor events
Extreme weather conditions and storms during the Pukkelpop music festival on 18 August 2011 led to casualties, injuries, infrastructural damage, and damage to crops in the surrounding area among other things. As a result, this extreme weather event has led to additional security measures, a higher alert, and closer monitoring of weather reports, especially in the lead up to and during large events.
