Main motivation for taking adaptation action

The risks and devastation associated with cimate change became apparent to the city after a large storm and landslide destroyed five houses. It was after this event that the Municipality decided to join Mayors Adapt and develop a local adaptation strategy.

Summary of the strategy/plan
Mosciano Sant'Angelo's Municipal Civil Protection and Emergency Plan contains a preliminary version of a risk and vulnerability assessment that focuses on hydrogeological, fire and seismic risks. It lays out a mass notification or alert system to more swiftly inform citizen's of natural disasters and other risks. The system consists of an app for smartphones (FlagMii) and a central contact center or back office that notifies citizens via text messages, emails, and social networks alerts.

CAPACities project
Mosciano Sant'Angelo is also one of two urban pilot regions that took part in the LIFE CAPACities - Climate Change Adaptation Planning Application Tool for Cities - project that was implemented by the Abruzzo Region. The project is aimed at developing a web application that can assess vulnerabilities to extreme weather events and identify and evaluate suitable adaptation options, thereby enhancing resilience and supporting the prevention and management of both man-made and natural risks. The application will be tested during the development of the draft urban adaptation plan.
