City Profiles

Næstved - Denmark

Climate change impacts

Næstved Municipality has a main city (Næstved), a number of smaller cities, areas with many vacation homes, and rural areas. Because of this, many different sectors will be affected climate change (primarily flooding and sea level rise).

Main motivation for taking adaptation action

Næstved's main motivation for taking adaptation action is its desire to be an attractive municipality where people want to live and where their well-being and health is prioritised.

Summary of the strategy/plan
The Næstved Climate Adaption Plan focuses on the current and future (to year 2110) climate impacts like flooding from the sea/fjord, cloudbursts, and flooding from streams. Issue areas that the plan addresses includes the integration of climate change adaption into city planning, how buildings are constructed in risk areas, dikes as a means of flood prevention, and providing citizens with adaptation-related information, etc. The plan's main focus is on identifying where exactly flooding will take place in the future.
Additional information on adaptation responses
In addition to where future flooding will take place, Næstved is assessing the specific assets we expect to be impacted by flooding (houses, roads, other infrastructure, etc.). Næstved recognises that a wide variety of actors, including citizens, companies, and the municipality, have a role in climate adaptation. A close partner of the municipality is NK Spildevand, which is responsible for the city's sewers. The Technical Committee is the political committee responsible for adaptation.

Planned adaptation actions

Næstved is focussed on integrating climate change adaptation into city planning, how buildings are constructed in risk areas, using dikes as a means of flood prevention, and providing citizens with adaptation-related information, among other things.

Good practice / spotlight item

The Great Dike

In order to prevent flooding as a result of sea level rise, Næstved is examining the possibilities of building a dike across the Karrebæk and Dybsø fjords. The project will protect Næstved City, a number of vacation homes, main roads, agricultural areas, etc. The dike will also create recreational areas along the coast.

This is a major project that is still in the initial stages. It has not yet been decided if the dike will actually be built.
