The European Commission is undertaking an impact assessment for the new EU Adaptation Strategy. During this webinar an overview will be given of the impact assessment, and of the interim results of the open public consultation. A discussion will be held with a panel of experts.

EU Blue Economy Report 2020

The European Commission presents an overview of the performance of the EU economic sectors related to oceans and the coastal environment. It includes a chapter on the impact of climate change on the ocean. With a turnover of €750 billion in 2018, the EU blue economy is in good health.

Climateurope Festival 2020 will be held virtually

The third Climateurope festival, 'Climate Information at Your Service', is reorganized towards a series of web-festivals, named 'webstivals'. Each webstival will be a virtual meeting lasting 3-4 hours on a single day, with multiple webstival events planned over the course of summer and autumn 2020. The boosted dialogue between science and society will support Climate Services on European and national levels.

Launch of Open Public Consultation for the design of the new EU Adaptation Strategy

The European Commission announced in the European Green Deal the adoption of a new EU Strategy on Adaptation to Climate Change. The Directorate-General for Climate Action launched on 14 May 2020 an open public consultation for its work on the new Strategy. A broad range of stakeholders, including citizens, businesses, NGOs, academia, national, regional and local authorities, are invited to provide inputs until 20 August 2020.

JRC study: Coastal adaptation against sea level rise makes economic sense

Coastal zones in Europe contain large human populations, significant socio-economic activities and assets, and fragile ecosystems. Coastal communities will face increasing risk of floods as climate change could cause extreme sea levels to rise with one meter or more by 2100. Coastal adaptation, however, could prevent 95% of the projected economic losses.

This special issue is about conditions, challenges, prospects and examples of European climate services markets. It starts with an overview of the market in terms of the current structure, its strengths and weaknesses, followed by articles focusing on leverage points to better match supply and demand. In the final section a deeper look into some sectoral applications is provided.

More forest fires in the Alps due to climate change

Climate change can lead to an increased number of severe forest fires in the Alpine region, resulting in the destruction of alpine protection forests and recreational areas, a rapid increase of natural hazard risk, and enormous costs for fire suppression. European State of the Climate 2019

The European State of the Climate (ESOTC) 2019 comprises a summary with key findings, and chapters about the climate in Europe, ranging from long-term indicators to detailed reviews of climate anomalies last year. The ESOTC is compiled by the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) and implemented by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) on behalf of the European Commission.

Using stories to encourage action

A strand of work from the EU PLACARD project focused on using stories and narratives in the context of climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction. Through a series of workshops and discussions, the project developed material to explain the value of storytelling, and guidance on how to create motivating narratives for your own situation and audience.
