Coastal Climate Core Services (CoCliCo)

Description:

The CoCliCo project is developing an open-source web platform informing users on present-day and future coastal risks with the goal of improving decision-making on coastal risk management and adaptation, by establishing an integrated core service dedicated to coastal adaptation to sea-level rise.

The project is built on the awareness of sea-level rise and coastal flooding consequences. With 7% of Europe’s population living in highly exposed coastal areas, it's urgent to plan now to protect lives and economies in the future. The project aims at creating an authoritative platform that meets the requirements of adaptation practitioners concerned with the identification of coastal territories at risk from inundation, coastal land use planning or maintaining coastal infrastructure services.

All coastal European countries need access to accurate data and models in order to translate science into understandable, actionable knowledge to inform decision making through:

  • identification of priorities;
  • Observation of past trends;
  • exploration of alternatives;
  • future planning.

The project is part of a cluster of European funded projects addressing coastal adaptation, creating an “ecosystem” of climate services.

In Dicember 2022, in a joint policy brief, the EU-funded H2020 projects PROTECT, CoCliCo and SCORE projects identified actions that are urgently needed to limit losses and damages, as coastal adaptation is an ongoing process that involves short-term actions, long-term planning and strategic thinking. The project in November 2023  partnered with PROTECT, SCORE and Rest Coast projects as part of Adapt4Coast Cluster—a collaboration of four EU-funded projects dedicated to bolstering climate resilience in European coastal areas and cities. The Adapt4Coast cluster was supported by the Horizon Results Booster, an initiative of the European Commission.
