Green and blue infrastructure for grey peri-urban landscapes (LIFE Green4Grey)
Description:
This Life+ project aims to design and develop multifunctional green and blue infrastructure in the Flemish Belt around Brussels and in De Wijers. Urban green and blue infrastructure not only supports the fight against biodiversity loss, it also helps cities to adapt to climate change, thereby generating a high social added value.
In six project areas in the Flemish Belt around Brussels and in De Wijers the scares remaining open space fragments in a greying peri-urban context are transformed into green/ blue infrastructure. These ecological stepping stones will fulfill multiple functions (ecosystem services), including natural water retention, recreation or form a “green lung”, and thus making an important contribution to urban climate change adaptation.
The Green4Grey project started in 2014 and will be finished in 2019, 4,4 million euros are invested with a European cofinancing of about 50%.
