Description:

EcoCities is a joint initiative between the University of Manchester and property company Bruntwood. The project looks at the impacts of climate change and at how we can adapt our cities to the challenges and opportunities that a changing climate presents. As an interdisciplinary research project, EcoCities undertakes a wide variety of research to support the process of planning for a changing climate in Greater Manchester. The key findings and outputs from the EcoCities project were launched on May 14, 2012 to a group of assembled stakeholders, businesses, policymakers and academics. Entitled ‘Four Degrees of Preparation’, the EcoCities webpage resource will boost the adaptive capacity of Greater Manchester. This contains all of the reports and publications that stemmed from the three-year project along with a spatial portal. The spatial portal is for all stakeholders and will help to raise awareness, aid decision-making and assist local community members to participate in devising appropriate adaptation responses. The interactive platform displays spatial data and provides information to improve understanding of issues of climate change vulnerability in Greater Manchester. By visualising vulnerability, exposure and climate hazards in a particular location, the portal will help to build the evidence base, raise awareness, assist decision-making and help local community members to participate in devising appropriate adaptation responses EcoCities outputs have wider relevance for other urban areas who are engaged in responding to the potential challenges and opportunities related to climate change.
