Description

The Heat Island Compendium describes the causes and impacts of summertime urban heat islands and promotes strategies for lowering temperatures in communities. The compendium consists of six chapters. The first, Urban Heat Island Basics, provides an overview of different types of urban heat islands, methods for identifying them, and factors that contribute to their development. It introduces key concepts that are important for understanding and mitigating this phenomenon.

Further chapters each focus on a specific strategy to tackle heat island effect in communities: Trees and Vegetation, Green roofs, Cool Roofs and Cool pavements. The sixth and final chapter gives examples of implementation of these strategies.
