Copernicus Climate Change Service and Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service

Description

The Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) and the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) are operated by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) on behalf of the European Commission. ECMWF also contributes to the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (CEMS).

C3S provides authoritative information about the past, present and future climate, as well as tools to enable climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies by policy makers and businesses in Europe and the rest of the world. C3S users include scientists, consultants, planners and policy makers, the media and the public. The majority of C3S service elements are implemented by about 260 companies and organisations across Europe, which are selected based on competitive Invitations To Tender (ITTs).

CAMS provides consistent and quality-controlled information related to air pollution and health, solar energy, greenhouse gases and climate forcing, in Europe and the rest of the world.

At the core of both operational service is an easy to access data infrastructure, the Climate Data Store (CDS) for climate-related data and the Atmosphere Data Store (ADS) for atmospheric monitoring data. The data stores come with all the essential aspects to derive actionable information and to empower data specialists, including documentation and quality assessments as well as a Toolbox for the CDS.

Key activities within climate change and health

The Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) is developing the C3S Sectoral Information System for Health (European Health Service, to be finalized in 2021). This service will deliver evidence regarding health impacts of past, present, and future climate, thus providing support to decision-making challenges that are currently facing unmet climate data needs. It will exploit the full range of climate information contained in the Climate Data Store, including historic climate information from the ERA5 reanalysis dataset, future climate projections from CMIP5 and Euro-CORDEX initiatives, and seasonal forecasts.

A selection of climate indices relevant for human health based on C3S data is available in the European Climate Data Explorer, a graphical user interface on Climate-ADAPT developed jointly by C3S and EEA.

Additional data workflows and applications can be developed at request from key stakeholders such as the European Commission, EEA, ECDC, WHO and associated partners.

The Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) provides daily analyses and forecasts of worldwide long-range transport of atmospheric pollutants as well as the background air quality for the European domain. At European level, data on pollutants is complemented by observations on pollen. CAMS also monitors the ozone layer on a daily basis.
