Assessing and selecting adaptation options

Once potential adaptation options have been identified and the catalogue of adaptation options has been created, the next steps are to assess and prioritize the options based on detailed information and criteria. Thereby suggested options must be assessed to determine their suitability to the local context, their effectiveness in reducing vulnerability or enhancing resilience and their wider impact on sustainability. The objective is to avoid decisions that lead to choosing unsuitable actions or to maladaptation. The selection of preferred adaptation options should be done in close interaction with all actors involved and stakeholders impacted in the adaptation process.

This step helps Covenant of Mayors signatory cities to develop an assessment system of adaptation options, gather necessary information on these options to enable the assessment, including costs and benefits and ultimately prioritise and select adaptation options for implementation of actions.
