European Commission consults on new EU framework for forest monitoring and strategic plans
On 25 August 2022, the EC launched an online public consultation on the upcoming legislative proposal for a new EU framework for forest monitoring and strategic plans. The aim is to develop an EU-wide forest observation framework to provide open access to detailed and accurate information on the condition and management of the European forests, including the support of adaptation of forests to climate change. All stakeholders are invited to share their views on this initiative via an online consultation that runs until 17 November 2022.

Special Report 21/2021: EU funding for biodiversity and climate change in EU forests: positive but limited results
The European Court of Auditors (ECA) has published the special report 20/2021 “EU funding for biodiversity and climate change in EU forests: positive but limited results”. Although forest cover in the EU has grown in the past 30 years, the condition of those forests is deteriorating. Sustainable management practices are key to maintaining biodiversity and addressing climate change adaptation and mitigation in forests, and the ECA has made recommendations to the Commission to use its legal options to improve the forest conditions in the EU.
