The scheme encourages the planting of forests on previously non-forested land in Ireland by offering grants and annual premiums. Its primary objectives are to increase national forest cover, support climate change mitigation, enhance biodiversity, and promote rural development. In terms of climate adaptation, the scheme contributes by boosting ecosystem resilience through the establishment of diverse native woodland types. It also helps protect water quality through targeted forest planting for water protection and strengthens rural livelihoods, enabling communities to better adapt to both environmental and economic changes.
