The European Territorial Cooperation (Interreg) Programmes aim to address common cross-border and transnational challenges, support synergies through joint partnerships and consolidate strong cooperation with a view to enable a balanced, economic, social and spatial development at European level.
The Interreg Programmes play a crucial role in climate change initiatives by fostering cross-border and transnational cooperation on sustainability, adaptation, and mitigation efforts. By funding projects that enhance resilience, promote renewable energy, improve water and waste management, and protect biodiversity, Interreg supports regions in addressing climate challenges collectively. This collaborative approach strengthens knowledge-sharing, policy alignment, and innovative solutions, ensuring a more sustainable and climate-resilient Europe.

Is a Consortium required to apply for the funding?
A partnership of between five and eight regions appears to be the configuration that best ensures a rich and successful interregional learning process. The recommended number of partners per project (excluding any advisory partners) ranges from a minimum of five up to sixteen, taking into account the following conditions: participation of the policy-responsible authorities as partners is compulsory for at least 50% of the policy instruments addressed in a project application; and, in terms of eligibility, the application should involve partners from three, four, or five of the programme’s defined geographical areas — North, East, South, West, and the candidate countries area. These partners should represent at least three countries, with a minimum of two from EU Member States, which are eligible to apply for Interreg Europe funding.
