The LIFE programme is the EU’s funding instrument dedicated to environmental and climate action. For the 2021-2027 programming period, LIFE specifically focuses on four key priority areas:
- circular economy and quality of life,
- circular economy and quality of life,
- climate change mitigation and adaptation,
- and the clean energy transition.
Within the climate change mitigation and adaptation area, the LIFE sub-programme manages around €905 million to develop and implement innovative solutions to address climate challenges. Its specific objectives include developing, demonstrating, and promoting innovative techniques, methods, and approaches to achieve the EU's climate action objectives, while contributing to the knowledge base and best practices. Additionally, it supports the development, implementation, monitoring, and enforcement of relevant EU climate action policies, with a focus on improving governance and enhancing the capacity of public and private actors, as well as involving civil society. The sub-programme also aims to catalyze the large-scale deployment of successful technical and policy-related solutions, replicating results, integrating related objectives into other policies, mobilizing investment, and improving access to finance. Furthermore, it may cover activities related to energy efficiency and renewable energy, provided they are not already covered by the Clean Energy Transition sub-programme.
