Objective of the funding programme

The objective of the programme is to support the development of comprehensive infrastructure projects that help cities adapt to extreme weather conditions and mitigate the urban heat island effect. This is achieved by incorporating green and blue infrastructure solutions, which focus on improving rainwater management, enhancing water retention, and reducing the impacts of flooding and droughts.

Key components of the programme include:

  • Rainwater Management: Developing sustainable systems to manage rainwater (and snowmelt) through green/blue infrastructure, which prevents flooding, reduces runoff, increases groundwater absorption, and helps manage water distribution during droughts.

  • Green-Blue Infrastructure: Expanding green-covered areas in cities and integrating blue infrastructure solutions, such as water bodies or systems, to improve urban resilience and climate adaptation.

  • Urban Climate Change Adaptation Plans (MPAs): Updating or developing urban climate change adaptation plans, which may also be supported as part of the programme.
