As Ireland’s forest cover stands at approximately 11.6%, one of the lowest in Europe, the purpose of this Pilot Scheme is to encourage the planting of native forests on state-owned former industrial cutaway peatlands, where appropriate. The scheme supports landowners of these former industrial cutover peatlands by covering the costs incurred in creating new non-commercial native woodlands.
Industrial cutaway peatlands are specifically excluded from general afforestation support schemes available to landowners. This Pilot Scheme is distinct from the Afforestation Grant and Premium Scheme because large areas of former industrial cutaway peatlands require special silvicultural techniques, longer operational timescales, environmental impact assessments, and ongoing management to successfully convert them into native woodlands—requirements not covered by existing schemes.
The scheme is limited to State bodies owning former industrial cutaway peatlands, with a maximum support ceiling of 500 hectares per annum.
