Objective of the funding programme

The SEAI Community Grants primarily focus on mitigation, aiming to decarbonise homes and community buildings through deep retrofits and renewable heating. However, by improving building fabric, energy security, and indoor comfort — particularly for energy-poor households — the scheme also indirectly supports climate adaptation and enhances community resilience to climate impacts.

All projects should be community-oriented and adopt a cross-sectoral approach. Project coordinators must demonstrate that they can sustainably finance the proposed project. A Project coordinator manages the entire process, from project submission and grant application through to the delivery of contractor works.

Partnership is essential for a successful community energy project. Project coordinators must include a diverse range of organisations in their application. Examples include GAA clubs and other sports facilities, local authorities, retail outlets, factories, community centres, not-for-profit organisations and charities, hotels, public sector facilities, and schools.

By bringing together groups of buildings under the same retrofit programme, community-wide energy improvements can be achieved more efficiently and cost-effectively than might otherwise be possible.
