European Climate Data Explorer (ECDE)

Interactive access to a selection of climate indices reflecting the priorities of the European Environment Agency (EEA). The underlying data is from the Climate Data store (CDS) of the Copernicus climate change service (C3S) . An online visualisation application allowing for flexible temporal and spatial exploration and analysis of recent past trends and projected future changes of a range of key climate indicators from multiple datasets to address informational needs regarding climate impact indicators relevant to climate change adaptation national initiatives across the EU. By clicking on the map you can explore the time series evolution of a chosen climate indicator for a selected region or point on the map. Further information about this application can be found in the ECDE application User Guide and the Data and datasets underpining the ECDE. The data underpining the application can also be accessed through the ECDE catalogue entry.

What you can do with it

Input

  • Select a European region, catchment or point on the map.
  • Choose a climate indicator, dataset and time period.
  • Explore recent-past trends and projected future changes.
  • Compare climate information across multiple datasets and governance levels.
  • Access the underlying data through the ECDE catalogue.

Output

  • Interactive European climate maps and graphs.
  • Time series for selected regions or map points.
  • Climate-impact indicators and datasets for multiple hazards and sectors.
  • Historical, present and projected climate information.
  • Results for catchments and NUTS0, NUTS1 and NUTS2 regions.

Use it to

  • Explore how key climate indicators have changed and may change across Europe.
  • Compare climate signals across regions, catchments and datasets.
  • Support climate-risk and vulnerability assessments.
  • Identify hazards and sectors requiring further investigation.
  • Access underlying Copernicus climate data for additional analysis.
  • Inform national and subnational adaptation initiatives.

Why is it relevant to climate adaptation

Provides flexible access to a focused selection of climate indicators chosen around European adaptation information needs. Its connection to the Copernicus Climate Change Service gives users access to authoritative observations, reanalysis and projections in one interface, while the map and time-series functions make comparisons across European regions easier. It is especially useful for establishing the climate-evidence layer of a risk assessment, but users still need exposure, vulnerability and local impact information for a complete assessment.

Used in

  • European climate-indicator analysis through Climate-ADAPT.
  • National and subnational adaptation initiatives across Europe.
  • Climate-risk screening for agriculture, coasts, energy, forestry, health, tourism and water management.
  • Catchment and NUTS0–NUTS2 analysis using data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service Climate Data Store.
  • European comparisons of observed trends and projected climate change.
