ECMWF

European Climate Viewer

Interactive viewer of climate hazard and impact indicators for Europe, developed by ECMWF for DG CLIMA under the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S). Its distinguishing feature is that indicators are explored by Global Warming Level (1.5, 2, 3 and 4 degC) rather than by emission scenario and time period, with each warming level tied to the median year in which it is reached. Users pick a hazard or sector, a warming level and a location, and see results on a map and chart as an absolute value, absolute change or relative change against the 1991-2020 reference. It is intended to give Commission services and other public authorities a common, policy-facing evidence base for climate resilience, linked to EU adaptation policy.

What you can do with it

Input

  • Select a hazard or sector, a warming level and a location (single grid cell or aggregated region)
  • Choose an absolute value, absolute change, or relative change against the 1991–2020 reference

Output

  • Interactive maps and indicator charts (median value plus expected P25–P75 range)
  • Curated climate indicators by warming level, also published in the Copernicus Climate Data Store

Use it to

  • Ask "what happens at 2°C" directly, without first choosing a scenario and target year
  • Get a common, policy-facing evidence base aligned with EUCRA, the EU Taxonomy and Climate-ADAPT hazard/sector definitions

Why is it relevant to climate adaptation

Keeps results comparable across DGs and Member States regardless of which emission pathway a given team is using, since its warming-level framing is scenario-independent by design.

Used in

  • Common evidence base for Commission services, national and subnational authorities and researchers under DG CLIMA/C3S; co-designed with DG REGIO, DG AGRI, DG MARE, JRC and EEA (June–July 2026); not yet publicly released or peer-reviewed
