According to a recent study, among others funded by the EU Horizon programme, European allotments cool an area estimated at 2.8 times their size, potentially benefiting 4.1 million people. Spatial policies could prioritise locating smaller allotments in city centres, to enhance heat resilience in densely populated cities.
