High performance computing to support smart land services

The Highlander project aims at reducing risks associated with climate change on human health, agriculture and livestock production. Through the use of High Performance Computing, the project strives for a smarter management of natural resources and lands

Adaptation Gap Report 2018

The adaptation gap reports focuses on one hand on existing gaps with a relevance for stocktaking and assessing adaptation progress and in its second part on the field of health.

WHO Guidance for Climate Resilient and Environmentally Sustainable Health Care Facilities

The aim of this guidance is to enhance the capacity of health care facilities to protect and improve the health of their target communities in an unstable and changing climate; and to empower health care facilities to be environmentally sustainable, by optimizing the use of resources and minimizing the release of waste into the environment. Climate resilient and environmentally sustainable health care facilities contribute to high quality of care and accessibility of services, and by helping reduce facility costs also ensure better affordability

Oxygen concentrations in European coastal and marine waters

Widespread oxygen depletion, partly due to natural conditions (stratification), occurs in the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea. No significant trends in concentrations were observed for the majority of stations in all regions during the period 1990-2017.

Global Heat Health Information Network

The Global Heat Health Information Network is an independent, voluntary, and member-driven forum of scientists, practitioners, and policy makers focused on improving capacity to protect populations from the avoidable health risks of extreme heat in our changing climate.

Tracking infectious diseases in a warming world

The so called “climate-sensitive infectious disease” (CSID) can be used as a climate change indicator. Given the scale and pace of the challenge that climate change presents, CSID indicators and their outputs must be paired with dedicated efforts to ensure they are translated into languages and formats that a wide range of audiences can understand, ideally co-designed with policy makers and potential users.

Drought impact on ecosystems in Europe

The indicator addresses anomalies and long term trends of vegetation productivity derived from remote sensing observed time series of vegetation indices in areas that are pressured by drought. Between 2000 and 2016, Europe was affected by severe droughts, causing average yearly vegetation productivity losses covering around 121 000 km 2

European Forests: Tackling Climate Change

This booklet aims to present wide range of SFM (Sustainable Forest Management) practices implemented in European state forests to cope with climate change impacts, both in the context of adapting forests to climate change and making them climate resilient, hence maximizing their contribution to the overall mitigation objective.

Adaptation Support Tool for Islands

The Adaptation Support Tool for Islands was developed in the framework of the SOCLIMPACT H2020 project. The aim of this tool is to assist policy makers and coordinators on the regional and national levels in designing tailored climate change adaptation strategies and plans for their islands

Towards SUstainable and REsilient EU FARMing systems

Farming systems in Europe face a range of economic, environmental and social challenges, including more volatile producer prices, new competitors in internationalised and liberalised markets, unusual weather patterns and higher risks of extreme weather events, upstream and downstream market power along the value chain, private standards, increasing dependence on non-farm land owners and financial institutions, demographic change and increasing urbanisation, changing policies and political risks as well as changing societal concerns and consumer preferences. The accumulation of these uncertainties and their potentially complex interconnections lead to concerns about the long term viability of food and other agricultural production, the sustainability of agricultural systems, the vitality of rural areas and the delivery of ecosystem services

Agroecology Initiatives in European Countries

The report maps and discusses the agroecological initiatives in 11 European countries across the pillars of practice, science and social movements. The mapping was approached by gathering information of agricultural practices, science, and social organizations in order to get a general overview of agroecological activity and level of development in each country

The Covenant of Mayors for climate and energy reporting guidelines

This guide is targeted at the Covenant of Mayors signatory cities in order to support understanding the Covenant reporting framework and to provide step-by-step guidance for the reporting process, complemented by practical recommendations and concrete examples. The data reported to the Covenant platform enables signatories to demonstrate the impact of their actions but also gives feedback on local actions to national, European and international policymakers

Urban Adaptation e-Guide

Urban Adaptation e-Guide, created in the RESIN project is a knowledge platform designed to support the development and implementation of an urban adaptation plan. The e-Guide contains information, guidance and advice on supporting tools, organized into a step-by-step process in four phases: Assess climate risks Develop adaptation approaches Prioritise adaptation options Develop adaptation plan 'My workspace' section of the e-Guide provides practical support for developing adaptation plans in a password-restricted environment, where adaptation activities can be grouped into projects, related notes can be stored and progress reports can be generated

INnovations in plant VarIety Testing in Europe to foster the introduction of new varieties better adapted to varying biotic and abiotic conditions and to more sustainable crop management practices

The objective of INVITE project is to foster the introduction of new varieties better adapted to varying biotic and abiotic conditions and to more sustainable crop management practices. In the context where agriculture is increasingly being urged to reduce its dependency on external inputs, lower its environmental footprint and cope with more variable climatic conditions, INVITE aims to help the valorisation and the promotion of varieties that are more adapted to sustainable management practices, and more resilient to climate change

ThinkNature

The ThinkNature platform is an integrated multi-stakeholder web solution designed to stir dialogue and interaction on NBS through discussion forums and debates in order to identify regulatory, economic and technical barriers and to communicate and promote successful NBS. The publicly available section of the Platform include the NBS Knowledge hub that stores: NBS projects – a one place stop linking to NBS project sites and platforms Case studies – a hub where one can explore exemplary NBS case studies worldwide and Resources – a knowledge repository for online resources The private section of the platform is used to foster the dialogue on issues related to NBS, promoting stakeholder networking

Panorama

PANORAMA – Solutions for a Healthy Planet is a partnership initiative to document and promote examples of inspiring, replicable solutions across a range of conservation and sustainable development topics, enabling cross-sectoral learning and inspiration. PANORAMA allows practitioners to share and reflect on their experiences, increase recognition for successful work, and to learn with their peers how similar challenges have been addressed around the globe

Nature Based Solutions – Technical Handbook

The technical handbook of nature based solutions is a catalogue of nature based solutions for urban adaptation to climate change, produced in the Urban Nature Labs (UNaLab) project. Currently a draft version of the handbook has been published and will be updated throughout the project, until the publication of the final version

reSilienT fARminG by Adaptive microclimaTe managEment

The STARGATE project is focused on integrating data on sustainable productivity and microclimate features to provide a better model for policymakers. Its comparative analysis will draw in national and European data and create visual analysis to provide more efficient and modern management in farming, by adding to the understanding of a local ecology and its features, including meteorological data

CAScading Climate risks: towards ADaptive and resilient European Societies

CASCADES seeks to understand the conditions under which climate risks propagate beyond their geographical, sectoral, and temporal location in ways that may affect European stability and cohesion. Its main aim is to identify the policy leverage points that can help the EU to adapt and respond to such cascading climate risks

MOnitoring Outbreak events for Disease surveillance in a data science context

In a changing environment due to climate change, animal and human mobility, population growth and urbanization, there is an increased risk of emergence of new and exotic pathogens. Public health officials tasked with safeguarding citizens against infectious disease outbreaks typically rely on official reports about specific diseases from healthcare providers (indicator-based surveillance or IBS)

Nature-based Solutions Evidence Platform

The overall aim of the platform is to consolidate and facilitate access to the large dispersed evidence-base on the effectiveness of NbS for addressing climatic impacts on people and economic sectors, and thereby support global efforts to design and implement robust targets for nature in climate change and development policy. The Nature-based Solutions Evidence Platform is an interactive map linking nature-based solutions to climate change adaptation outcomes based on a systematic review of the peer-reviewed literature
