Enhancing climate change adaptation strategies and measures in the Metropolitan City of Milan (LIFE METRO ADAPT)

Description:

The METRO ADAPT project aims to mainstream climate change adaptation strategies and measures in the development of a territorial plan for the Metropolitan City of Milan (CMM) and in the planning and building rules of the 134 CMM municipalities. In the project, nature-based solutions are promoted for tackling climate related risks and to regenerate neglected urban spaces. Bottom-up initiatives are enhanced to increase citizen awareness and engagement. Innovative meteorological satellite data and high precision soil sealing maps are developed to produce detailed vulnerability analysis focusing on heat islands and floods. Further, a network of Italian and European metropolitan areas is developed, to enhance mainstreaming of adaptation policies and measures and support the implementation of nature-based solutions.

In 2023, METRO ADAPT wins the Best LIFE Project Award in the Climate Action category for enhancing climate change adaptation strategies and measures in Milan, Italy’s second-largest city, using water management and nature-based solutions to implement sustainable drainage systems and prevent flood risk in urban areas.
