Implementation of a forecAsting System for urban heaT Island effect for the development of urban adaptation strategies (LIFE ASTI)

Description:

The LIFE ASTI project aims to design, implement, pilot and validate a set of urban heat island (UHI) forecasting systems in Thessaloniki and Rome and to establish dissemination tools to enable open access to UHI-related information.

The impact of future climate change scenarios on UHI will be assessed for the two cities and the impact of urban greening will be evaluated in areas combating the UHI effect. Modelling systems for the two cities will be developed and supported with good practice guides and efficient strategic plans for mitigating future UHI effects. Implementation of the strategies will be promoted and events organized to support transferring the modelling systems and adaptation strategies to other European cities with similar challenges. The project contributes towards the Greek Climate Change Adaptation Strategy and the ministerial decision of 2017 on the regional plans for climate change adaptation.

Among the expected results of the project are heat health warning systems for the pilot cities  and a web-based open access portal and a mobile application to disseminate the forecasting products to authorities, stakeholders and the general public.
