Description:

The risk of erosion phenomena and marine flooding is increasing in the mid- to long term owing to the effects of climate change (sea level rising, extreme storm events, etc). Consequently, many Public Administrations need to develop a strategic approach to the Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) with a particular emphasis on coastal protection. The loss of transport of sediment by rivers (owing to hydraulic works, bridles, crossbars, dams on rivers), the presence of hard protection works and harbours along the coasts (that intercept the natural distribution of sediments) and the effects of climate change have increased the vulnerability of coastal stretches, today affected by diffuse erosive processes and marine flooding hazards. In this context it is evident that there is a need for a strategic and sustainable management of coastal sediments, paying attention to the new environmental aspects involved in the related activities. The project focuses on two main axisis. (A) Capitalization of knowledge and resources already acquired in the field of coastal protection including: (1) Sustainable Technologies for exploiting sand stocks, (2) Sustainable Technologies for coastal protection and adaptation, (3) Environmental Impact Assessments of the new technologies and Strategic Environmental Assessment on coastal plans. (B) Mid to Long Term planning actions for climate change effects adaptation of coastal zones in line with the EU Directive 2007/60/EC, including: (1) Development of Territorial Action Plans for adapting coastal zones to climate change, against erosion effects and submersion risk, (2) Definition of Sediment Management Plans for both off-shore and littoral deposits exploitation , (3) Appropriate EIA Protocols in order to assure the right procedures in intervening along coastal zone, (4) Training and coordination of the appropriate authorities
