Research funding programme that brings together the research communities of marine, maritime, economical, and societal research to address the major challenges faced by the Baltic Sea System. The strategic objectives of BONUS (2011-2017) are to (1) understand the Baltic Sea ecosystem structure and functioning, (2) meet the multifaceted challenges in linking the Baltic Sea with its coast and catchment, (3) enhance sustainable use of coastal and marine goods and services of the Baltic Sea, (4) improve the capabilities of the society to respond to the current and future challenges directed to the Baltic Sea region, and (5) develop improved and innovative observation and data management systems, tools and methodologies for marine information needs in the BSR enhancing sustainable use of coastal and marine goods and services of the Baltic Sea.
