Description

Seas At Risk is an umbrella organisation of environmental NGOs from across Europe that promotes ambitious policies for marine protection at European and international level. While the work of Seas At Risk reaches into every corner of concern about the marine environment, and while the organisation regularly works on a multitude of different marine environmental issues, there are some basic principles that transcend individual issues and guide the direction of its work: sustainability, precautionary action, integration, democratisation. Sea At Risk works on the following marine and maritime issues:

  • Climate and oceans; in addition to drawing attention to the marine effects of climate change (e.g. in particular acidification), the organisation's work pushes to ensure that key marine industries, such as shipping, play their part in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and tackling the threat of climate change;
  • Blue growth and Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP);
  • Aquaculture;
  • Marine litter, considering both waste from land and from sea;
  • Shipping;
  • Fisheries;
  • EU marine strategy

While Seas At Risk pursues issues by participating in governance processes at international level (e.g. International Maritime Organisation), EU level (working with the European Institutions) and regional level (e.g. OSPAR, the regional fisheries Advisory Councils), member organisations play an important role by helping to ensure the essential link to national settings.
