The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) aims to help developing countries to reduce vulnerabilities and build resilience to the impacts of climate change. UNEP builds and strengthens national institutional capacities for vulnerability assessment and adaptation planning, and supports national efforts to integrate climate change adaptation measures into development planning and ecosystem management practices. The work is guided by and contributes to the Nairobi Work Programme on Impacts, Vulnerability and Adaptation (a programme developed by the UNFCC to help countries understand climate change impacts and adapt to climate change).
UNEP-WCMC’s Climate Change and Biodiversity Programme is a key partner in UNEP's work on climate change adaptation. It has been providing decision makers with policy-relevant information, syntheses and analyses on the linkages between climate change and biodiversity since 1998. Its core work focuses on the impacts of climate change and climate policy on biodiversity and ecosystem services, and on the role of biodiversity and ecosystem services in climate change mitigation and adaptation.
