Description

The Flood Observatory processes remote sensing data, transforms such into water extent maps, supporting GIS files, and discharge values, and publishes this information at its web site for use by an international community. The work proceeds forward, in near real time, but the same methodologies can also be applied to archival data sets: to locate, map, and measure large floods further back in time. On a more local basis, the Observatory hopes to acquire flood extents back to the mid-1970s, when the first Earth Observation satellites with public data access began operation. The Observatory partners with operational water organizations for further development of technical capabilities, and to participate in meeting operational needs. The Flood Observatory also actively collaborates with relief agencies, emergency managers, the insurance industry, and the media during and after major flood events, worldwide. Staff
