Energy Sector Management Assistance Program
Description
The Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP) is a global knowledge and technical assistance program administered by the World Bank. Its mission is to assist low- and middle-income countries to increase know-how and institutional capacity to achieve environmentally sustainable energy solutions for poverty reduction and economic growth. Since its inception in 1983, ESMAP has supported more than 800 energy-sector activities that promote poverty reduction, economic growth and low carbon development in over 100 countries. The energy sectors of developing countries may be sensitive to the effects of climate change, such as reduced rainfall, sea level rise, and increased frequency and/or severity of natural disasters. ESMAP’s work on adaptation seeks to develop and test processes to mainstream climate risk management into energy sector planning and operations and to support awareness raising and knowledge transfer.
