Comprehensive monitoring of stand dynamics in Białowieża forest supported with remote sensing techniques (LIFE ForBioSensing)

Description:

The aim of the ForBioSensing project is to develop and apply a monitoring methodology for large forest areas using innovative techniques. The main project objectives are:

  • Monitoring of stand dynamics in Białowieża Forest
  • Analysis of natural forest regeneration and rejuvenation
  • Create/define a combination of remote sensing techniques and datasets for forest monitoring needs
  • Study the BBiałowieża Forest microclimate
  • Promote the Białowieża Forest through multimedia

Project activities are focused on providing a comprehensive illustration of changes in forest stands and their dynamics (by using several different time series of remote sensing data) and moving from field scale (measurements on sample plots) to the large scale area monitoring. This will improve the efficiency of operations carried out in the forest ecosystems protection. The observed changes in the tree species composition of semi-natural forests can therefore be the basis for adaptation of forest management practices to changing climate conditions and for conservation of valuable natural habitats that are sensitive to climate change.

Project results will show specific changes over the years to the local community (through radio and television broadcasts, meetings, leaflets and promotional films) and to specialists in the field of natural sciences in Poland and abroad (through seminars, conferences and journal articles). Awareness of the local community about the environmental changes will be verified by a direct survey conducted at the beginning and at end of the project.
