Description

The LIFE COOLCITY project aims to strengthen the climate resilience of cities by supporting the planning and management of blue-green infrastructure (BGI) through advanced data-driven tools. The project provides local authorities with comprehensive and comparable information on urban environmental conditions by combining remote sensing technologies (satellite and aerial data) with expert knowledge and spatial analysis.

COOLCITY addresses key urban climate challenges, including urban heat island effects, surface sealing, water retention, biodiversity loss, and the condition of green infrastructure, through the development of integrated indicators and the COOLCITY Index. These tools enable cities to assess their adaptive capacity, identify priority intervention areas, and compare performance across different urban contexts.

The project follows a comprehensive adaptation pathway, guiding cities from environmental inventory and spatial assessment to planning and prioritisation of nature-based solutions (NBS), as well as long-term monitoring. It supports evidence-based decision-making in urban planning, climate adaptation strategies, and investment prioritisation.
