Description

The overall goal of the LIFE-CLIMCOOP project is to develop, test and demonstrate collective actions between a city government and a multinational company to reduce local climate risks and enhance joint climate change adaptation to the benefit of both parties. The pilot demonstration will particularly explore water-saving opportunities in the upstream parts of the River Sajò in Hungary. The long-term objective is to replicate the methodology in other climate change-vulnerable urban and industrial areas in Central Eastern Europe.

The project emphasizes sustainability and replicability, focusing on long-term climate change adaptation.

Key achievements include:

  • Joint Climate Adaptation Strategy: A decade-long framework guiding climate efforts for the city and BorsodChem Zrt., alongside the Heatwave Action Plan.
  • Natural Water Retention Measures: Implemented in the Tardona catchment to control peak water flows.
  • Reclamation of Salty-lagoon: Restored wetland habitat supports biodiversity and protected bird species, enhanced by a bird observation tower.
  • Urban Tree Inventory: Provides critical data for tree planting and ecological planning.
  • Green-Roofed Building: Experimental bus shelter integrates greenery into an industrial environment.
  • Greywater Treatment Prototype: Reduces fresh water demand by producing technological-quality water.

By conserving water and restoring ecosystems, the project prepares communities and wildlife for the impacts of climate change while ensuring resource sustainability for future generations.

The main results are available in the project's reports.
